A Brief History of Rosewood Baptist Church

Rosewood Baptist Church started as a satellite local mission of the North York Chinese Baptist Church in April 1979. Sunday worship service was held at the Churchill Heights Baptist Church from 1979 to 1985.

In 1985, Rev. Michael Yeung became the first full-time pastor and worship service was relocated to the Malvern Jr. Public School. The mission became independent and incorporated under the name Scarborough Mission (Chinese) Baptist Church in April 1988.

In 1989, the church started to hold worship services on her own property at 75 Kirkdene Dr. At the same time, Malvern Baptist Church was being planted. Thanks are to God; Malvern Baptist Church became independent in April 1993. Two other major changes occurred in 1993. First of all, Mr. Ka Wong joined the pastoral staff to assist in the areas of youth and English-speaking ministries. Secondly, the Sunday worship service was relocated to Sir William Osler High School due to a change in the demographics of the Chinese community.

In 1996, Mr. Ka Wong was ordained. In 1997, the church officially joined the Fellowship Evangelical Baptist Churches of Canada as a member. In 1998, the church sold the property at 75 Kirkdene Dr. and relocated the church office to 3447 Kennedy Road. This was a necessary move to adapt to the continuing change in the demographics of the Chinese population. Mary Ward Secondary School became the new worship location in September.

In January 2000, the church bought the present property and began a new building project. One year later, in October 2001, the current building was completed. At the same time, the name of the church was changed from Scarborough Mission (Chinese) Baptist Church to Rosewood Baptist Church to identify with the community that we serve.
